I took these two of Liam and I like them both but I only want to put one in my portfolio. Which one do you like and why?

i can see your dilemma Emilie, but my choice would depend on what you want it in your portfolio for? in #1 his hair looks much courser making him look older than he is and a kind of worried look in his eyes, it's cute, but wouldn't be my choice, in #2 however, the hair is much softer and lighter somehow and he has a more mischievous look in his eyes, definitely my choice Very Happy

Love them both Emilie but the top lip is slightly distorted pushing the nose slightly out of shape on #1 leading me to vote for # 2 by a margin of 51% to 49%.

Bit subjective but - hey ho! ~ John

I am not sure what you mean by this but this might help. Next year when Liam starts kindergroup and I go back to work I will be most likely if all goes according to plan, go pro. I am building a portfolio and in May I will be doing a series of probono work to add to my portfolio. I want to put one of these in my portfolio to show to clients along with the others of Liam. Once I get more variety I will remove most of Liam's photos from my portfolio but right now he is my captive audience.

Thanks for your thoughts. I like the composition of the first one with his hand to the right but I like the expression on his face in the second one.

what i meant was, if it's to show how well you take photos of children or just in general your photography work, i also like the expression in #2 better it just appeals more to me and the comp in #1 as you say is better, i am 100% certain that Liam is not an unhappy baby but in #1 he does look worried/unhappy and my thought is that won't appeal to customers as much as shot #2 would, make sense? scratch forgive me if i sound harsh, i don't mean to be, i just can't seem to put into words what i want to say today Rolling Eyes

Which one? 169474 also on going pro i wish you the best of luck and hope all the plans go accordingly Very Happy

Sharon love, you can never be too harsh. I understand what you are saying. Thank you for your comments. It is what I wanted to hear.

#2 is the better shot for a portfolio, other parents would prefer the expression in this pic and the hands are connected to the face while in #1 it is detached from the rest of him.

Both are excellent shots, as always, but #2 is the better for portfolio purposes.

I think you going pro is a great idea, you are a very very good photographer and will have no trouble making a living at it.
Plus we are always here for inspiration, critique, etc. Very Happy

Thanks John and Stewart for your comments. Stewart thank you for the wonderful compliment..blushing. I don't think I will give up my day job though. I make way to much money for that and I like it. I plan on going pro on a part time basis to start of course, the big thing is to build the portfolio this can take some time. I need to get my arse out there to hook up with some moms and moms-to-be. I still have lots to do. Build another webpage, develop a pricing and studio fees and also get my studio up and going again. I am getting excited about it. I have a pro bono shoot coming up soon. I will post the results when I get them processed for sure. I would love to have all your opinions

hugs

Hi Em, Your son and heir is growing so fast! I am going against all the others. I like #1 for a few reasons.

1. The eye contact
2. More contrast, making a clearer more defined shot.
3. A different expression - not the usual.
4. Off centre composition

Hope I haven't confused you too much.

These are both such lovely pics

I like no. 1 better because of the eye contact, but 2 is great too.

Thanks Jan and Robin. Jan, those are the reason I liked No. 1 for the composition, eye contact and it was just a wee bit different. Thanks everyone for giving me your comments and suggestions.

hugs
